Army conducts combat proficiency competition for soldiers

The General Officer Commanding 82 Division of Nigerian Army, Maj Gen T.A.Lagbaja has declared open a six-day inter-brigade combat proficiency competition for officers from formations and units towards preparing them for more challenges and responsibilities.

The competition which is being hosted by 14 Brigade, Ohafia involves five competitive events like weapon handling, half cross country, navigation, obstacle crossing and combat swimming while twenty officers each drawn from participating divisions and formations are competing.

Also, formations and units taking part in the six-day exercise are 13 Brigade, 14 Brigade, 34 /302 AR, 82 Division garrison 44EB/54 who are featuring officers from rank of second lieutenant to Major.

In his address during the opening ceremony, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, of Nigerian Army, Maj Gen T. A. Lagbaja, represented by E.S. Mustapha said the inter-brigade combat proficiency competition is being used to prepare the mental and physical abilities of the officers in combating insurgency and other sundry crimes.

Gen Lagbaja explained that ” It is also to prepare the soldiers in readiness to secure the country now and in the future and to promote esprit de corps among soldiers ” , while commended the Commander of 14 Brigade Ohafia for ably hosting the competition.

He went further to assure Nigerians, especially South Easterners of continued security of their lives and properties by the Nigerian Army.

In his opening remarks, Commander 14 Brigade Ohafia, Brig Gen Muhammed Bello Wabili , “Due to the recent insurgency across the country, the Nigeria Army has increasingly been engaged in combat operations across the country”, adding that there is continued need to improve the mental, emotional and physical fitness of soldiers to make them combat-ready.

He charged the participants to keep to the rules of the game.

Commandant of Nigerian Navy Finance and Logistics College, Owerrinta, Navy Capt U.M.Bugaje representatives of Police, DSS and paramount ruler of host community, Ohafia were present during the opening ceremony.
